How many countries use UPI - Its global footprint -

  • France - Recently, France became the latest country to adopt UPI. The announcement, made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 14, 2023, marks a significant milestone. The service will launch from the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris, promoting digital payments and convenience for Indian tourists.

  • Singapore - The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Monetary Authority Singapore (MAS) linked UPI with Singapore's PayNow on February 21, 2023. This partnership allows users in both countries to enjoy quicker and cheaper cross-border remittance options, streamlining payment processes for businesses and individuals.

  • Oman - In October 2022, NPCI formalised an agreement with the Central Bank of Oman, making UPI available for digital transactions on all platforms. This collaboration facilitates seamless payments between India and Oman, promoting bilateral trade and investment.

  • Nepal - Nepal embraced UPI real-time payments in 2022, thanks to the partnership between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and Gateway Payments Service & Manam Infotech.

  • UAE - Colloborating with NEOPAY, Mashreq Bank's payments subsidiary, NIPL brought UPI payments to the UAE in 2022. This development benefits the large Indian diaspora in the UAE and strengthens financial connectivity between the two countries.

  • Bhutan - Bhutan led the way by becoming the first neighbouring country to adopt BHIM UPI. Launched virtually on July 13, 2021, the UPI payment app, inaugurated by FM Nirmala Sitharaman and her Bhutanese counterpart, Lyonpo Namgay Tshering, has transformed payment experiences for Bhutanese citizens.
