 Google’s New AI Service Bard

Google has been working on a conversational Artificial Intelligence (AI) service, presented in an experimental phase yet open to public use. It is known as the Google Bard. The Bard AI bot is powered by Language Model for Dialogue Applications (shortened as LaMDA).

Google Bard AI can now be used in over 180 countries for everyone with a Google Workspace account. Earlier, it was available only in the US and the UK through a waitlist. The chatbot is expected to be available in Japanese, Korean, and 40 other languages in the coming days. In addition, Google is integrating the AI bot into 25 products, including Gmail and Google Maps.

Too Soon to Get Up, Close, and Personal

Google has warned users not to interact with Google Bard too personally. The AI bot collects user Bard data and feedback to improve service quality. Google has reiterated that Bard is still an experiment and may offer incorrect or inappropriate responses.

The tool should not be relied upon for critical subjects like medical, legal or financial advice. Besides, disclosing user identity or sensitive information to the tool is not advisable. Google’s promotional material for Bard suggests more direct interactions like - How to explain to a child why the sky is blue, design a balanced vegetarian diet or get ideas for a song lyric, etc.

Ensuring Your Privacy

You can protect your privacy while using Google Bard, but only to an extent. To do so, you can visit the webpage - myactivity.google.com/product/bard. Here you can turn off the Bard activity.

You can also delete your Bard activity from your account. Instead of manually deleting the action, you can change the auto-delete option to the nearest duration. Google, however, confirms that the conversations will remain stored for a short period so that the tool can provide the required service and process feedback.

With Bard, Google expects to extend the benefits of AI into its product line. For instance, Google Search will soon have AI features as a part of its service. If you already use an AI tool, you should try Google Bard to check if it meets your needs.
